We spent 8 nights on a Raja Ampat North tour in February 2024.
Unfortunately, we were unlucky on two crucial points. Point 1: The tour to the north could not be carried out due to the weather conditions further north (we had calm seas). So we spent most of our time in the Mansuar, Arborek and Fam region, which was also very easy to get to from our resort in the second week. There were also some average and less interesting dive sites.
Point 2: the guide. We were given a young freelancer with apparently little experience. He often dived away quickly at the front without showing us anything. If he found something, he only pointed to it briefly and was already gone again. For me as a photographer in particular, this was very tedious and I always found the interesting photo opportunities myself. We pointed out this problem after the first day and also tried to motivate the guide. After further negative experiences, I asked for a better solution with a different guide. It was only after talking to Nick, the owner of La Galigo, and the concession of two other guests that they relented and we were able to dive with Fendy, a very competent and experienced guide, for at least 1 1/2 days. A difference like night and day! 6 stars definitely for Fendy.
The crew is excellent and everyone is very friendly and concerned about the guests. The food always tasted very good and is very fresh and varied.
Especially the good soul of La Galigo, Ary, looked after us very well and was also very friendly.
The Master Cabin on the upper deck was nicely situated, but also smaller than the cabins below. Overall ok, but too expensive compared to other cabins. The beds are very comfortable.
Safety! There were inexperienced divers with air (not nitrox) who dived WITHOUT a computer, diving yo-yo profiles and having to set a reef hook for a safety stop as they could not tare. Nitrox was measured by the crew and could only be checked on request. Both an absolute no-go for me on a liveaboard with 4 dives per day in a remote area without medical care. I have never experienced this on 18 liveaboards.
All in all, La Galigo has a great crew and good guides, but there is still room for improvement in terms of quality for this price when it comes to diving (and that's why you come to Raja Ampat)
