Conclusion
The Palau Siren is a liveaboard which, due to its condition, can only operate to a limited extent in the waters of Palau. In addition, the Palau Siren is run by a cruise director (Anne) who must be dismissed due to her limited ability to run a liveaboard.
At present, a liveaboard on the Palau Siren cannot be recommended.
Palau Siren
The Palau Siren has not been serviced for some time. If you look at the external wear and tear, it can be assumed to be at least 7 years old. I do not have exact details. Insiders on Palau, as well as the crew, confirm behind closed doors that an overhaul is urgently needed.
Visible defects, which I can assess as a layman, are a rusty mast with heavily mossy sails. This defect is also regarded as serious and allegedly massively restricts the seaworthiness of the Palau Siren.
Furthermore, the sofas in the saloon are very worn and worn through in many places. Guests also complained about a very loud air conditioning system and a non-functioning fan, which was simply acknowledged without any further action.
It can be assumed that we have only seen the tip of the iceberg and that the list of defects is much larger.
Tour
Our tour started on 22.12.23 and ended on 02.01.2024 in Koror. From previous tours and the resulting experiences, we assumed that we would only cover short distances by skiff (speedboat). Unfortunately, this was not the case. The skiff trips usually took between 10 and 35 minutes. This was due to the Palau Siren. It only changed its position three times during the 10-day tour. Not including 2 shifts of a few hundred meters each time. This meant that the difference to the dive centers operating from Koror was small.
The circumstances mentioned above also meant that we dived a lot at the dive centers operating from Koror. As a result, there were up to 10 other boats at some dive sites. Dive sites in Peleliu, which are mainly visited by the safari boats, were only visited once for a double tank by skiff. Of course, we were alone in Peleliu and the dive sites were one of the highlights.
After we had done the double tank in Peleliu, the Siren sailed back to Koror in the afternoon for reasons unexplained to all the guests. We all lost a wonderful afternoon dive here. We and the other guests were very surprised about this. Especially as such postponements take place either in the early hours of the morning or during dinner. I would also like to point out that this happened on 30.12.2023 and there was no rush to return to Koror.
In general, I would like to say the following about the diving. All 16 guests dived at the same spot at the same time. This inevitably led to the formation of packs and some negative diving experiences. As an apology, it must be said that the dive centers in Koror have a similar procedure. However, the dive planning without taking the tides into account cannot be excused. We were on the German Channel with outgoing current and had to change our plans on the spot. When the tide is high in the lagoon, I have to reckon with this situation.
Crew & cruise director
Cruise Director Anne's strict adherence to the plan does not allow for any flexibility or any response to guests' wishes. For example, on the day of check-in we wanted to deposit our luggage on the ship at around 9:00 am, as we would be diving with Sam's Tours all day afterwards. It was not possible to deposit our luggage as all of the guests' luggage is not checked in until 17:00. This was incomprehensible and incomprehensible to me.
The cruise director Anne, hereinafter referred to as CD, took the cake for us on day 4. We ran out of beer that day. The reason was that the brewery did not deliver the desired quantity. Instead of procuring beer elsewhere before departure, nothing was done. This annoyed the majority of the guests immensely and CD was made very aware that the trip would not continue without beer. I think she was shocked by the seriousness of the reactions. 1 1/2 days later, beer was back on board.
However, this incident resulted in the CD completely changing its behavior towards the majority of the guests. There was no more briefing from CD after this incident. CD did not speak a single word to most of the guests until the end of the trip. No hello, no enjoy your meal or Happy New Year. That was a very pathetic picture of CD.
It should be mentioned that after the early return to Koror on December 30th, CD took the opportunity to disembark on New Year's Eve and spend the New Year at home. We had never seen a CD leave the boat early before. The obligatory group photo of CD was also canceled on the evening before check-out and a farewell only took place within her diving group.
These incidents are unique and show me the lack of social skills that a cruise director must have. For these reasons, Anne is an absolute no-go as a CD.
I would also like to mention that the rest of the crew did a very good job within the scope of their possibilities.
