My third 14-day southern tour back to Malé (my second time on the Serenity). Unfortunately, it was also the weakest of the three "Sharktastic" tours so far.
Highlights:
- The saloon waiters, who were extremely service-oriented and maintained high standards
- Master cabin with plenty of space (closets, empty corners for suitcases, small table)
What was weak (lowlights):
- The dhoni crew was a B-team. In 14 days, they only stopped by twice to help with the BCD during the dive. Otherwise, they were daydreaming (also, endless wait times upon surfacing until someone finally spotted you)
- Guide: never seen such a poor performance (zero-plan guide: just see what the others are doing and line up my group either in the middle or at the back....it’s a given that the diver sees very little....by the way, you can get that for a quarter of the budget in Egypt)
- Cruise Director: They claim to have the experience (but personal observations aren’t a serious study—there’s no comparison). But of course, they have an audience to spread questionable know-how within the dive community. Some knowledge of shark behavior, research, and a bit more expertise in underwater photography would be helpful. If everything is off-limits to me, I’d like to know that BEFORE booking. Tip: Do your research!!
- Dive sites: If, for example, you’d rather dive a house reef instead of Fish Factory, that’s fine, but on recent trips that was a highlight. You don’t get more than what you pay for... unfortunately
- Guide general performance:
These guides leave their group for 20 minutes at a spot worth seeing (e.g., a digging ray). The other groups? They’re on their own. In the past, the guides made sure everyone got a chance to see something (especially at crowded spots). Also, diving around behind hooked-up groups is no longer part of diver etiquette. Go to the front and scare the sharks away. The hooked-up groups have 5 hours of bottom time anyway, so no problem.....
It was a nice trip, but as I said, the comparison with the two previous safaris especially clouds the picture. I probably wouldn’t go on the Serenity again. At most, I’d go on the Explorer, hoping it’s still as good as it was two years ago.
