My wife and I were guests in Papua Paradise Eco Resort from 12 to 26.02.2023. First of all: it was an all-round great vacation, although this was not under a good star - twice postponed because of Corona, then the evening before departure the flights with Turkish Airlines were canceled. Here a big praise to Marion Goldmann and her team of Aqua Active Agency, who unbureaucratically and quickly rebooked for us. The flight went via Doha and Jakarta to Sorong. Jakarta is a very confusing airport, here you should plan at least 4 hours for the onward flight. One is besieged when changing from the International Terminal 3 to the Domestic Terminal 2 lsofort by a horde of cab drivers, whose rate varies between 66 and 15 euros for a 5km ride. However, it is easier to take the free Skytrain (about 4 minutes), but this is poorly signposted and does not run between 9pm and 6am.
The pickup from Sorong is excellently organized by the resort, there was a short stay in a simple but clean city hotel to freshen up and have breakfast.
The resort itself is getting on a bit but is super well maintained. The staff is more than friendly and helpful, the cuisine is fantastic: inventive and varied, especially the fish dishes were a dream. Our bungalow No.109 was a bit further away from the restaurant, you could watch baby sharks, manatees, stingrays and bumphead parrotfish from the terrace. Unfortunately, however, the bungalows have no direct access to the sea: swimming is only possible from the jetty or, after an idyllic walk through the jungle, from the second jetty on the opposite side of the island.
Smoking is only allowed on your own terrace or away from the dive center, there is also an absolute smoking ban in the open areas and on the boats. Social media junkies are sentenced to Digital Detox- the internet is only sporadically available, a 1MB file can take half an hour. Sending videos is therefore almost impossible or requires a lot of patience. Excursions are very individual and well organized, but you can also explore the jungle of the island on small trails by yourself.
Incidental expenses are quite high, as in all resorts on Raja Ampat. A small Bintang beer costs 4 euros, a bottle of simple wine 32 euros. Recommended are the Balinese massages for about 30 Euro / hour.
The diving is also very individualized, in small groups with usually one guide per buddy team and a maximum of 4 divers per boat. The dive sites are varied and not overcrowded, in contrast to Kri, Fam and Mansuar (is also offered as a day trip) little dived, but just as beautiful and you have the dive site almost always for yourself. In 30 dives we did there, we had a different highlight on every dive. From pygmy seahorses to blue ringed octopus to wobbegongs, manta rays and mobula schools, you can spot almost anything here, including large schools of fish and huge coral fields. However, to explore all the dive sites, you should be comfortable with current. However, for beginners there are also some low current dive sites.
The resort strongly focuses on environmental protection and tries to avoid plastic as much as possible or to dispose of it properly. However, even here the tide often washes mountains of plastic onto the beach, and even on excursions you can hardly get 50 meters without seeing plastic floating on the sea.
Conclusion: a well-run resort with optimal location in the Dampier Strait, due to the many beautiful local dive sites certainly an alternative or complement to a liveaboard.
